We have been engaged to design an extension to an historic homestead in Mount Gambier.
The original house ‘Holstein” is a heritage listed house, and is grand in scale, however the cellular-ised rooms do not allow open living.
The clients desire a light spacious extension that connects the kitchen space into the rest of the house. Our solution has been to place a large floating box over towards the living space that will house the new master bedroom, ensuite and large study. The floating form references the roof pitches of the existing house, and is low in scale to maintain the same height of the existing house, a key heritage consideration.
A double volume space around the entry and meals area will create a dramatic space, enhanced by an inventive sun shading system facing north.
